Solar Becomes Pakistan’s No.1 Electricity Source in 2025

In a major energy milestone, Pakistan has positioned solar power as its largest source of utility electricity in 2025—leaping from fifth place just two years ago.
According to data from Ember, as reported by Reuters, solar farms contributed an average of 25.3% of utility electricity generation during the first four months of the year. This puts Pakistan among fewer than 20 nations worldwide where solar contributes a quarter or more of monthly power supplies.
For perspective, global solar averages hover around 8%, with China at 11%, the U.S. at 8%, and Europe at 7%. Aside from Australia and Chile, Pakistan is one of the only non-European countries to achieve this threshold.
Fueling this rise is a massive surge in solar imports: between 2022 and 2024, Pakistan’s imports of Chinese-made solar components jumped fivefold—from 3,500 MW to a record 16,600 MW.
As Pakistan continues to ramp up clean energy capacity, the shift reflects both rising demand and strategic investments in solar infrastructure—placing the nation firmly on the map of global energy transition.
