Careem to Shut Down Ride-Hailing in Pakistan Amid Economic Pressures
Careem has announced it will discontinue its ride-hailing services in Pakistan effective July 18, 2025, marking the end of nearly a decade of operations in one of its key markets.
In a message to users, the company expressed appreciation for the support it received over the years and acknowledged the difficulty of the decision. Customers with remaining balances in their Careem Wallets will receive instructions on how to reclaim their funds. Meanwhile, customer support via “Careem Care” will remain active until September 18, 2025, to assist with any unresolved issues.
The decision comes as Careem faces mounting competition from rivals like Yango and inDrive, along with broader economic challenges. CEO and Co-founder Mudassir Sheikha cited “macroeconomic realities, intensifying competition, and global capital allocation” as key reasons behind the move.
Careem first entered the Pakistani market in 2016, launching in major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad during the rise of mobile internet access. While the ride-hailing chapter is closing, Careem Technologies—the company’s tech division—will continue operating from Pakistan, focusing on building its “Everything App” for the region.
