Hunza Hotel Shut Down After Viral Video Reveals Sewage Discharge Into Attabad Lake

Authorities have sealed a prominent hotel in the Gojal region of Hunza and imposed a Rs. 1.5 million fine following the emergence of a viral video by a foreign vlogger that exposed the hotel for dumping sewage directly into Attabad Lake.

Khadim Hussain, Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), confirmed the violation of environmental terms outlined in the hotel’s No Objection Certificate (NOC), prompting swift legal action.

“This is a grave breach of environmental regulations. The hotel had clear instructions regarding preservation practices, and their failure to comply has serious consequences,” he said.

The footage triggered public outrage on social media, prompting immediate attention from environmental authorities and the provincial government. Gilgit-Baltistan government spokesperson Faizullah Firaq stated that the matter was taken up promptly, with the Hunza district administration ordered to launch a full investigation.

He added that environmental compliance is a fundamental requirement for tourism permits and that violations like this will be met with strict penalties.

Environmental activists and concerned citizens have called for strong action to uphold ecological integrity in Hunza, a globally recognized eco-tourism destination celebrated for its natural beauty.
