Pakistan Airports Authority Hikes Cargo Fees After Five-Year Freeze
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has implemented a sharp increase in air cargo handling charges across the country, with some categories seeing up to a 100% hike—marking the first major revision in five years.
According to an official notification issued on July 1, the updated tariff structure was approved by the PAA’s executive committee to better reflect rising operational costs at airports nationwide.
Key Changes in Cargo Rates:
- Pet birds: Charges increased by 50%, from Rs200 to Rs300 per kg
- Betel leaves: Rates doubled to Rs70 per kg
- General cargo: Up by 25%, now Rs125 per kg
- Other animals: Revised rates also apply to cats, dogs, and miscellaneous cargo
PAA officials defended the decision, citing a prolonged freeze on tariffs despite escalating service and maintenance costs. The authority, established in August 2024 under the Pakistan Airports Authority Act, oversees the development and regulation of airport and air transport services across the country.
