Government to Refund Electricity Overcharges, Offers Temporary Relief
The federal government has announced plans to refund additional charges collected from electricity consumers, offering a potential reduction of 30 paisas per unit for one month. This adjustment is based on a fuel price adjustment application submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) for February. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will review the proposal tomorrow.
In February, 6.495 billion units of electricity were generated, while 6.666 billion units were supplied to electricity companies. The per-unit electricity cost stood at Rs. 8.22, slightly below the reference cost of Rs. 8.52 per unit.
Electricity generation sources for February included 27.12% from water, 15.02% from local coal, 1.56% from imported coal, 10.32% from gas, 14.11% from imported LNG, and 26.59% from nuclear energy.
If approved, this decision could bring slight financial relief to consumers struggling with high electricity bills. The final outcome hinges on NEPRA's ruling on the CPPA's application.
