World Bank Approves $47.9M Grant to Transform Primary Education in Punjab
Lahore, August 25, 2025 — In a major boost to Pakistan’s education sector, the World Bank has approved a $47.9 million grant to improve access and quality in pre-primary and primary education across Punjab. The funding, provided through the Global Partnership for Education Fund, aims to tackle learning poverty and strengthen foundational education for millions of children.
The initiative—titled “Getting Results: Access and Delivery of Quality Education Services and System Transformation in Punjab”—will focus on:
• Expanding early childhood education
• Re-enrolling out-of-school children
• Enhancing teacher support and training
• Improving the sector’s resilience to climate change and emergencies
World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, Bolormaa Amgaabazar, emphasized the project’s role in building long-term human capital and driving inclusive economic growth. “This is a crucial step toward equitable access to quality education across Punjab,” she stated.
The project is expected to benefit over 4 million children, including:
• 80,000 out-of-school children
• 3 million+ in School Education Department (SED) schools
• 850,000 in non-formal education
• 140,000 differently abled children in Special Education Department (SpED) schools
Additionally, more than 100,000 teachers, school leaders, and community members will gain from professional development and awareness campaigns. Indirect beneficiaries include all students impacted by broader system reforms.
World Bank Task Team Leader Izza Farrakh noted that the project aligns with Punjab’s broader education reform agenda, aiming to create a more effective, accountable, and inclusive system. It will strengthen coordination across departments, empower schools, and build lasting partnerships with communities.
