WhatsApp Ends Support for Older Phones Starting June 2025
Millions of users may lose access to WhatsApp as Meta discontinues support for outdated smartphones from June 1, 2025. The update aligns with WhatsApp’s security and compatibility requirements, ensuring users have access to the latest features.
Devices No Longer Supported
WhatsApp now requires at least iOS 15.1 or Android 5.0 to function. This impacts several older models, including iPhones released before 2014 and Android devices that cannot upgrade past their 2014 software versions.
Affected Devices:
iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus (incompatible with iOS 18)
Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, Sony Xperia Z (unable to update past Android 5.0)
Notifications Issued Ahead of Lockout
WhatsApp alerted users with unsupported devices, urging them to update or switch to a newer model to retain access to chats and calls. Those unable to upgrade will lose functionality.
What Users Should Do
Check for available software updates or transition to a supported device to continue using WhatsApp without disruption.
As WhatsApp introduces advanced security features, support for legacy devices is being phased out to enhance user experience and data protection.
