TLP Protest Sparks Clashes and Security Lockdown Across Punjab and Capital

The Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) launched a protest march from Lahore on Friday, aiming to reach Islamabad for a demonstration outside the US embassy. The rally, framed as a show of solidarity with Palestinians, quickly escalated into confrontations with law enforcement.

In Lahore, tensions flared at Chauburji Chowk as protesters attempted to dismantle roadblocks. Clashes resulted in injuries on both sides, with Edhi Foundation confirming several policemen were hospitalized. TLP representatives reported one fatality and over 20 injuries among their ranks.

In anticipation of unrest, Islamabad authorities sealed major entry points with shipping containers and suspended mobile internet services in both Islamabad and Rawalpindi. A directive from the Ministry of Interior authorized the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to halt 3G and 4G services until further notice.

The Islamabad traffic police issued diversion plans, restricting heavy vehicle access and rerouting smaller vehicles around Faizabad. Over 500 containers were deployed to secure the Red Zone, affecting key roads and intersections. Public transport services, including metro and electric buses, were suspended across 21 routes.

Security forces detained at least 280 TLP members, while over 13,000 personnel—including police, Rangers, and Frontier Constabulary—were mobilized in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Section 144 was enforced across Punjab, banning public gatherings and the display of weapons, amid warnings of potential terrorist threats targeting religious figures and minorities.

Educational institutions, including the University of Punjab, were closed, and scheduled government exams were postponed. The situation remains volatile as authorities brace for further developments.
