Temu Faces Potential Ban in Pakistan Over Regulatory Concerns
By Business Desk August 27, 2025
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is reviewing a formal request to ban the popular e-commerce platform Temu, following concerns raised by major retail associations over its unregulated operations.
The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) confirmed that it has forwarded the request—originally submitted by the Pakistan Retail Business Council (PRBC) and the Chain Store Association of Pakistan (CAP)—to the PTA for further action. The associations argue that Temu and Shein are operating in Pakistan without proper regulatory approval, posing risks to local retailers and consumers.
In an official letter dated August 22, 2025, the CCP clarified that it lacks the authority under the Competition Act, 2010 to restrict access to mobile apps. Instead, it directed the matter to the PTA, which holds jurisdiction over digital platforms and app accessibility under national telecom regulations.
The final decision now rests with the PTA, which may choose to block or impose restrictions on Temu’s services in Pakistan. The move could significantly impact online shopping behavior, especially among price-conscious consumers who favor Temu’s low-cost offerings.
