Port Qasim Authority Announces 30,000-Tonne Storage Expansion to Boost Cement Exports

Karachi, Sept 12, 2025 — In a strategic move to strengthen Pakistan’s cement export capacity, the Port Qasim Authority (PQA) has proposed a new 30,000-tonne storage facility, aimed at meeting rising global demand for cement and clinker. The initiative was unveiled during a high-level meeting of the Task Force on Enhancing Cement and Clinker Exports, chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Haroon Akhtar Khan.
The PQA chairman confirmed that the proposal is under review by the PQA Board, with repair work on existing facilities scheduled for completion by December 2025. The meeting brought together key stakeholders including Rana Ehsan Afzal, Arif Habib, and representatives from KPT, SBP, BOI, and Gwadar Port Authority.
Infrastructure upgrades were a focal point, with two new multi-purpose berths at Port Qasim nearing completion and Karachi Port’s berths 10–17 expected to be operational by April 2026. To expand market access, the State Bank of Pakistan has been directed to collaborate with Pakistan’s Ambassador in Dhaka to identify Bangladeshi cement importers and streamline Letters of Credit.
To tackle logistical bottlenecks, a sub-working group has been formed to identify land near the Karachi Northern Bypass for truck marshalling yards — a move expected to reduce transport costs and improve export efficiency.
