Petroleum Prices Surge as Govt Announces Latest Hike
The federal government has introduced a significant increase in fuel prices for the final fortnight of the fiscal year 2024-25.
Under the revised rates, petrol now costs Rs. 258.43 per liter after a Rs. 4.80 per liter hike, while high-speed diesel rises by Rs. 7.95 per liter, setting the new price at Rs. 262.59. The revised prices take effect from June 16, 2025.
Previously, petrol saw a modest increase of Rs. 1 per liter, while diesel remained unchanged. Despite the absence of general sales tax (GST) on petroleum products, the government collects around Rs. 94 per liter through various levies, including the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) and customs duties.
Oil companies and dealers receive Rs. 17 per liter as distribution and sales margins. The price hike reflects ongoing adjustments in fuel pricing policies.
