Pakistan Launches First Donkey Meat Processing Plant for Exports to China

In a significant move to meet China's growing demand for donkey meat, bones, and hides, Pakistan has inaugurated its first donkey meat processing plant in Gwadar. These products are primarily used in the production of e-jiao, a traditional Chinese medicine.

According to officials from the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, a Chinese company has commenced operations at the new plant. This development marks a pivotal step in creating a unique export industry, as authorities find it more practical to process and export donkey products rather than live animals.

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Food Security confirmed that Pakistan’s donkey population has reached 5.9 million, and with the finalization of necessary protocols, exports to China can now officially commence.

This initiative is expected to benefit both countries. For Pakistan, it generates new sources of income and employment opportunities, while for China, it ensures a reliable supply of donkey-derived products for traditional medicinal purposes.

The project reflects Pakistan’s growing interest in non-traditional exports. By establishing proper facilities and adhering to international standards, the country aims to strengthen its presence in this niche market.

As the industry grows, officials will closely monitor regulations and ethical concerns to ensure smooth operations. The success of the Gwadar plant could pave the way for similar projects in other regions.
