Pakistan Cracks Down on 139 Platforms Selling Citizens’ Private Data
In a sweeping cybercrime investigation, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has identified 139 digital platforms allegedly involved in the unauthorized sale of Pakistani citizens’ personal data.
The exposed network spans across websites, mobile apps, and social media accounts. Investigators revealed that 18 mobile applications, 17 websites, and 2 YouTube channels were actively trading sensitive information. Additionally, 75 Facebook profiles, 10 Instagram accounts, 12 Telegram handles, and 10 TikTok accounts were implicated. A WhatsApp group was also found to be facilitating data sales.
Following NCCIA’s recommendations, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken swift action by blocking all flagged platforms.
Authorities confirmed that the next phase will include filing formal charges and arresting those responsible. Once in custody, suspects will be questioned about the origins and channels of the leaked data.
This alarming breach has reignited national concerns around digital safety and data governance, underscoring the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity frameworks and regulatory enforcement.
