Islamabad Plans Electric Tram System to Modernize Public Transport
Islamabad’s Capital Development Authority (CDA) is advancing efforts to introduce an electric tram service, a move aimed at transforming urban mobility with eco-friendly transportation options.
Following a key meeting with the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa confirmed that the feasibility study for the tram system is now underway, aligning with directives from the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister.
Building on the success of Islamabad’s electric bus network, officials are assessing the viability of Soft Wheel Electric Trams to optimize commuter routes. The study will determine operational logistics, infrastructure needs, and integration with existing feeder buses.
Sources indicate that a Chinese consulting firm may oversee the study, with four priority routes under review—connecting Rawat to Faisal Mosque via the Expressway and Jinnah Square to Islamabad International Airport along Srinagar Highway.
While previous light rail proposals never materialized, this initiative signals renewed commitment to sustainable urban transport, with stakeholders focused on ensuring successful implementation.
