Government Reduces Railways Jobs to Cut Costs in Pakistan
To reduce expenses and enhance efficiency, the government of Pakistan has decided to eliminate 17,101 jobs within the Ministry of Railways. This decision was made during a cabinet committee meeting on right-sizing, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.
The meeting revealed that 29 ministries had already canceled 11,877 positions and removed 4,660 redundant posts. Pakistan Railways took a significant step by cutting a substantial number of jobs. Railway officials reported that out of 95,859 total positions, 17,101 have been eliminated, with plans to reduce another 15,000 jobs shortly as part of ongoing reforms.
These job cuts aim to enhance the operational performance of Pakistan Railways and modernize its systems. By focusing on efficiency and cost-saving measures, the government hopes to make the railway sector more sustainable and better suited to meet contemporary transportation needs. However, these changes also underscore the challenge of balancing cost reduction with the potential social impact of job losses.
