Tackling Online Fraud: Over 1,000 Arrests Made in Pakistan in 2024

Government records reveal the extent of online fraud cases reported in Pakistan throughout 2024. A total of 13,722 citizens filed complaints after falling victim to scams on digital platforms. Authorities responded by registering 832 cases and arresting 1,212 suspects during the year.
Despite significant enforcement efforts, the judicial process remains slow. Of the 1,212 suspects arrested, final convictions were secured in only 17 cases—highlighting the need for more robust prosecution mechanisms.
Law enforcement agencies have made notable progress in recovering stolen funds, retrieving Rs. 652.62 million from fraudsters in 2024. To address the growing issue, the Ministry of Interior has launched public awareness campaigns through schools, media outlets, and social media platforms, educating citizens on how to identify and avoid scams.
Additionally, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has strengthened its online portal, facilitating easier complaint registration for victims. By focusing on education, enforcement, and accessible reporting systems, the government is taking a multi-pronged approach to combat the rising threat of online fraud.
While efforts to recover funds and apprehend suspects are ongoing, the low conviction rate underscores the need for greater efficiency in prosecuting cybercrime cases.
