Shipping Firms Raise Emergency Surcharge on Pakistan Trade Routes

International shipping companies have announced additional freight charges of up to $800 per container for cargo moving to and from Pakistan. The Emergency Operational Recovery Surcharge (EORS), effective May 15, applies to shipments across Europe, the US, Africa, Asia, and the Mediterranean.

Shipping carriers have started rerouting freight via Colombo and Salalah due to operational disruptions. CMA CGM has implemented an $800 emergency fee per container for shipments to key regions, and other companies may follow suit. Despite these adjustments, Karachi Port Trust reports normal port operations with no congestion.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has allowed cargo ships carrying Indian goods to dock, despite recently imposed restrictions on Indian-flagged carriers. Indian-origin goods transiting through Pakistan remain unaffected by the policy. India's ban on Pakistani imports last week is estimated to have impacted thousands of twenty-foot equivalent units of cargo exports.
