Pakistan's Economy on the Mend: Tarar Highlights Progress Amidst Political Turmoil

Lahore, Pakistan - November 8, 2024 - Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has expressed optimism about Pakistan's economic trajectory, stating that the country is on the path to recovery despite the disruptive tactics of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

In a recent interview, Tarar highlighted several key indicators of economic improvement:

  • Foreign Exchange Reserves: Reserves have crossed the $11 billion mark, signaling a significant boost in the country's financial health.
  • Remittance Growth: Remittances in October surged to $3 billion, demonstrating the resilience of the Pakistani diaspora.
  • Price Relief: The government's efforts have led to a reduction in prices for essential commodities like wheat, flour, petroleum products, and electricity.

Tarar credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's leadership for these positive developments. He also emphasized the government's commitment to attracting foreign investment, citing upcoming visits from UAE delegations and ongoing investments from countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar.

Political Landscape and Foreign Policy

The minister touched on the ongoing political climate, accusing the PTI of resorting to disruptive tactics to seek leniency for its leader, Imran Khan. He reiterated the government's stance that there would be no compromise on accountability.

On the international front, Tarar highlighted Pakistan's active role in regional and global affairs. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to attend the Riyadh Summit to discuss the Palestine issue and other regional matters. Pakistan is also actively engaged in climate change initiatives and will participate in COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Domestic Issues and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Tarar criticized the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government for neglecting education and suppressing teachers' rights. He also expressed concern over the KP government's focus on political rallies rather than development initiatives.

Looking Ahead

The minister concluded by emphasizing the importance of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and its potential to further boost Pakistan's economy. As CPEC enters its second phase, both countries are poised to deepen their economic ties and unlock new opportunities for growth and prosperity.
