Pakistan Issues Licenses for Local Electric Vehicle Assembly
The Pakistani government has granted licenses to 57 manufacturers to bolster local electric vehicle (EV) production. This initiative is a major step towards promoting eco-friendly transportation. According to Radio Pakistan, the licenses include 55 for two- and three-wheeler EVs and two for four-wheeler assembly.
Government’s Strategy for EV Expansion
Beyond manufacturing, the government is focusing on building a comprehensive EV infrastructure. Plans include nationwide charging stations, featuring both fast chargers and battery swapping stations. Under the new EV policy, the government offers incentives like free registration, exemption from annual token fees, and waivers on toll taxes to promote EV adoption.
Progress and Challenges in EV Production
Despite these efforts, EV production in Pakistan has not met its targets. Senator Sherry Rehman highlighted that only 60,000 EVs have been produced so far, significantly lower than the 600,000 target.
Reduced Electricity Tariffs for EV Charging
To accelerate EV adoption, the government has reduced electricity tariffs for EV charging stations by 45%. Energy Minister Awais Ahmad Leghari announced the tariff reduction, making it more affordable to charge EVs. This price cut is expected to increase the number of charging stations and encourage small businesses to enter the battery charging sector. Setting up charging stations can be approved within 15 days through an online portal.
