National Assembly Passes PECA Amendment Bill to Regulate Social Media

Lahore, January 23, 2025 — The National Assembly of Pakistan has approved the PECA Amendment Bill, 2025, which seeks to regulate social media. Introduced by Federal Minister Rana Tanveer, this bill aims to protect users’ rights and ensure accountability on digital platforms.

A new authority will be formed to oversee social media platforms, including registration, rule enforcement, and removal of harmful content. This authority will feature nine members, including key officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), as well as experienced journalists for balanced representation.
