MOITT Clarifies No Government Role in Zahanat AI Development

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MOITT) has officially stated that it has no involvement in the creation of Zahanat AI, an artificial intelligence chatbot recently mentioned by the Federal Minister for IT.

In a formal response to the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom, the Ministry explained that Zahanat AI is a privately developed initiative and not a government-backed project. While the minister acknowledged its existence, MOITT emphasized that the government has no ownership or direct association with the chatbot.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to encouraging innovation and fostering private sector growth in emerging technologies but clarified that it does not claim credit for independently developed AI solutions.

Additionally, MOITT highlighted a separate government-led project focused on developing an indigenous Large Language Model (LLM). This initiative is progressing under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Information Technology Board (NITB), the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), and Jazz, aiming to enhance AI-driven efficiency, transparency, and innovation in Pakistan’s digital landscape.

This clarification helps address confusion surrounding government involvement in AI advancements, ensuring a clear distinction between private-sector initiatives and state-backed projects.
