Microsoft to End Support for Remote Desktop App by May 27, 2025
Microsoft has announced that support for its Remote Desktop app for Windows will officially end on May 27, 2025. After this date, users will no longer be able to connect to services such as Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box using the legacy app. Instead, Microsoft is encouraging users to transition to the newer Windows App, which offers a more modern and enhanced experience.
Why the Change?
This shift comes as no surprise. Microsoft introduced the Windows App in September 2024 as a replacement for the older Remote Desktop app. The new app brings significant improvements, including multi-monitor support, dynamic display resolution, and streamlined access to cloud-based PCs and virtual desktops.
Moreover, the updated app is designed to deliver better performance and usability, aligning more closely with Microsoft’s current cloud-first strategy.
What Will Be Affected?
Connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Dev Box via the legacy Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be completely blocked after the May 27 deadline. While the app may still function for other local or non-cloud-based remote connections, its utility will be significantly reduced.
What Should Users Do?
Microsoft recommends that all users and organizations migrate to the Windows App to avoid disruptions. The new app is available through the Microsoft Store and is compatible with modern versions of Windows.
Additionally, IT departments should inform employees and update internal support documentation to reflect this change. By transitioning early, users can take advantage of the improved performance and features the Windows App offers, ensuring a smooth experience beyond the support cutoff.
