Japan-Funded Project to Modernize Faisalabad’s Water System with 8,400 Smart Meters
In a move to improve water management in Faisalabad, the Government of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have granted 510 million Japanese yen to install 8,400 smart water meters under the Economic and Social Development Program.
The agreement was formalized in Islamabad, marking another step in Japan’s ongoing support for Pakistan’s water infrastructure. Faisalabad, the third-largest city in Pakistan, struggles with limited water availability—many residents receive water for just six hours a day. WASA Faisalabad’s flat-rate billing system has contributed to inefficiencies, excessive consumption, and restricted investment in infrastructure upgrades.
With the introduction of smart meters, WASA aims to transition to a consumption-based billing model, improving water conservation, revenue collection, and overall service efficiency. This initiative also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), promoting universal access to safe and sustainable water resources.
At the signing ceremony, Japanese Ambassador AKAMATSU Shuichi expressed hope that this funding would enhance water services and contribute to better public health and living standards. JICA Pakistan’s Chief Representative, Naoaki Miyata, emphasized that smart meters will accelerate digital transformation in Faisalabad’s water management.
The project is expected to benefit thousands of households, ensuring more sustainable water usage in one of Pakistan’s busiest urban centers.
