Government Proposes Rs 2 Per Unit Cut in Electricity Prices for Spring 2025, Promising Rs 52 Billion Relief

The federal government has proposed reducing electricity prices by Rs2 per unit for the second quarter of the 2024-25 fiscal year. If this plan is approved, the price drop will commence in March, offering more than Rs52 billion in relief to consumers.

Power distribution companies have submitted their requests for the adjustment to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), which will review the proposal during a public hearing on February 12.

If approved, the reduction will be reflected in March, April, and May electricity bills. However, lifeline consumers—those who use minimal electricity—will not benefit from this change. On the contrary, K-Electric customers in Karachi will be included in the relief plan.

The purpose of this proposed price cut is to alleviate the financial burden on households and businesses amid rising inflation and economic challenges. The government aims to provide temporary relief and lower electricity costs for many consumers. The final decision will be made by Nepra after considering all factors.

For now, citizens are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the hearing, hoping for lower electricity bills in the upcoming months.
