Eid ul Azha 2025: Skyrocketing Livestock Prices Leave Buyers Struggling
With just days left until Eid ul Azha, buyers in Rawalpindi and Islamabad are finding it increasingly difficult to afford sacrificial animals due to soaring prices. The three major cattle markets in the twin cities have seen low purchasing activity, as many visitors leave without making a purchase after inquiring about prices.
Unprecedented Price Hikes
The cost of livestock has surged dramatically this year, leaving many buyers frustrated. A 20-kg goat is now priced at Rs. 100,000 or more, while bulls weighing around 200 kg are selling for Rs. 300,000 to Rs. 400,000. Even joint purchasing options, where a single share in a larger animal costs Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 80,000, remain out of reach for many.
Shift Towards Collective Sacrifice
Due to these high costs, more people are opting for collective sacrifice, where a share can be booked for as low as Rs. 35,000. This trend is gaining traction among families looking for a more affordable way to participate in Eid traditions.
Market Conditions & Trader Concerns
Livestock has been transported from Punjab and other provinces, with authorities providing tents, lighting, water, feed, parking, and veterinary services. However, despite these facilities, sales remain slow, and traders fear a repeat of last year when many were forced to take unsold animals back home.
The Reality of Eid ul Azha 2025
The rising costs of fodder, transportation, and labor have contributed to this price surge, making sacrificial animals a luxury that fewer people can afford. As Eid approaches, buyers continue to search for budget-friendly options, while traders hope for a last-minute surge in demand.
